Vintage isn’t just back, it’s big. In fact it’s so big it’s been re-branded. We now call it ‘retro’, and there’s ‘classic’ vintage and ‘collectible’ vintage.
There are even sub-genres (‘upcycling’, ‘decoupage’ and ‘modding’, to name just a few).
What it all means, basically, is that if it’s vintage, it’s in fashion. And if it’s also
cool, hey, it’s hip too.
Cork has its very own vintage/retro quarter just off MacCurtain Street, at Mother Jones Market. Look at the pictures and you’ll get some idea of what’s it’s like.
But it’s also got a special atmosphere. The people there are friendly and helpful, and you’ll be surprised by what you’ll find.
From furniture to jewellery, ornaments to clothing, vinyl records, old cameras, books and items of local interest – the list is endless. it’s got a lovely cafe too.
So if you’d like a vintage browse or a retro rummage, check out Mother Jones Market. And don’t be surprised either by the number of tourists who visit there – it’s listed as one of Cork’s premier attractions on a number of websites.
